Why? After searching high and low for the perfect baby shower gift for my best friend (who happens to live abroad), I realised that there wasn’t much of a selection of beautiful and original proudly South African gifts on offer. As I soon discovered, most local baby shops offer imported gifts and items and, since her gift was going to a baby born overseas, I wanted something that was designed and
handmade in South Africa. It was at this point that I put my creativity to good use and started Cotton Candyfloss – a selection of handmade baby gifts to suit any occasion.

We offer a unique range of baby shower gifts, as well as one-of-a-kind gifting options that
are suitable for first birthdays, newborn hospital gifts, and other special

Advice for others wanting to start their own business? Be patient as success doesn’t happen overnight and never let anyone make you believe you can’t do something – where there is a will there is a way. Also that making mistakes in business is a good thing because it helps you make better decisions down the line.
Biggest highlight since starting your business? A woman from America ordered a soft bunny (Our yellow Benny the Bunny) from me, which cost R160, but the courier fee was R500! But she was happy to pay it - as it was a gift to her granddaughter and she said she just 'had to have it for her!' The other highlights - having positive feedback on my products and services as well as happy, repeat customers.

Any low's or biggest lessons learned? Don't rely on one supplier - always have a back up for when one lets you down! And use suppliers that share the same vision and/or ethics as you and your business.
I love your soft toy range. What is the creative process behind creating these?
I enjoy coming up with soft toys that are super cute and cuddly as well as being functional.
For example - Mr Caterpillar is cute but also educational - all his body segments are made up of different shapes (star, circle, triangle etc... ), which are stuck together with Velcro, so that a child can pull it apart and put back together again.
Then there is the Bunny the Pyjama bag that keeps your childs pj's safe all day long in its tummy.
The black and white striped Zebra Baby Rattle with pink tutu is my favourite - great as a baby shower gift. All babies that hold the zebra squeal with laughter when they shake her and that makes me smile.

Your favorite cake & coffee spot? Kiddilicious - 15 Nicol Road Bedfordview- it only recently opened. It has a great coffee shop called The Red Door that serves great coffee and cake but best of all a great big outdoor play area that your kids can play safely in while you catch up on some work or news with friends. Its also has very pretty surroundings.
You know Johannesburg well – any suggestions on a beautiful venue to host a baby or bridal shower? Kiddilicious.
